What an honor for Julie to receive one of the highest awards accorded by Grove City College upon graduation — Senior Woman of the Year 2013! President Richard Jewell made the presentation during Parents Weekend at the Recognition Convocation in the chapel. His remarks referenced the following writeup that was prepared for this award ceremony:
Julie Apple has contributed greatly to GCC as a three-year member of the women’s varsity soccer team, a freshman RA, and a tour guide. She has served on the Religious Activities Committee, the Parent’s Weekend Dinner Committee, and the Student Faculty Review Committee. In the academic realm, she has been a student assistant for two accounting professors, an accounting tutor, and a member of the Finance Society and Operation Top Management. She has participated in Adopt a Grandparent, Discipleship Group, and an ICO Trip to Washington, D.C. She is a member of three honoraries: ODK, Mortar Board, and Delta Mu Delta. One student who nominated Julie for the award declared, “I can attest to her integrity in every area of her life. She has accomplished so much and yet she is so humble and looks out for the good of others. Her track record academically is phenomenal, and she excels in her classes in addition to creating positive relationships with her professors.” Another nominator stated, “she has played on the Varsity Women’s soccer team for 3 years and has been an integral role in motivating the team and promoting unity among the players. Last year Julie took the season off to serve as a Freshmen RA, a position that is demanding of both time and energy. Working cohesively alongside her co-RA, Julie truly poured out to the young women on her hall and was clearly a comfort, encouragement and role model to those young women.” A third proclaimed, “Julie is a light and an incredible Christian example to everyone she meets. She is strong academically as an Accounting major and member of ODK. As a freshman RA her junior year, she impacted the lives of many girls on her hall organizing events, creating community, and constantly encouraging and valuing each girl.”
In addition to the plaque, Julie’s name was inscribed on The Rock outside of the Chapel as an ongoing testament to her contribution to Grove City College.
With her signature ever-present smile, Julie delivered some very brief comments in receiving the award where she drew attention to Matthew 5:14-16 —
“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Certainly her desire is not to attract attention to herself but to glorify the Lord.
The emotions of this past wonderful weekend were summed up by Julie in these words of thanksgiving from Psalm 126:3 — “The Lord has done great things for us; We are glad.”
