Hurricane/Terrorist Logistics Help Tourists Exit DC

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to drive into the heart of Washington D.C. and yet how difficult it is to find a variety of routes to take you back out?  Our nation’s capital is now installing new Evacuation Route signs that should help alleviate this confusion.

Evacuation routes are currently designated by a D.C. flag on street signs. Mayor Adrian Fenty has said he doesn’t believe most people in the city understand that the flag designates an emergency evacuation route.

The new plan calls for attaching a blue sign with white writing to the top of street signs on evacuation corridors. The new signs read “evacuation route.” Officials said the signs will more clearly identify evacuation routes out of the city.

There are 19 emergency evacuation routes in the city that are scheduled to get the new signs.
