The large neon signs advertising gasoline prices cannot always be taken at face value. Often there is small print that cannot be read by the driver on the highway. Take Lil’ Mart in Wiscasset, Maine. As we pulled up on vacation to refuel, impressed with the advertised rate of $2.75 per gallon, we were ambushed. Turns out the posted rate was “with a car wash.” The actual price was close to $3.00 per gallon — a little on the high side compared to the other stations in the same area. Other stations love to advertise their “Cash” price — even though most customers are looking for their credit card rate. You just have to have your eyes wide open and read all of the fine print to be an intelligent consumer.
